OVERVIEW

As Reich and many others have discussed, our version of capitalism has changed from democratic capitalism after FDR to becoming oligarchic and serving only the few. I quote Joseph Stiglitz on why this is an important book to serve as the backbone of this course: "Robert Reich has written a riveting guide to how our economic and political system has become so badly flawed, distorted by pervasive rent seeking and monopolies. He explains our rising inequalities and our poor economic performance. Wholesale reform is needed - far beyond the usual prescriptions of rising the minimum wage and spending more money on education."

Participants are encouraged to dig deeply into areas that are of especial interest to them and share their views with the group. Controversy will be encouraged and participation is expected. My particular views should only be considered on their merits. Especially when we are considering reforms, a variety of ideas are important for there is obviously no one reform will save capitalism and most reforms are very complicated. We should leave the course better informed, armed with resources, and have a clear idea of how we can personally do our part in saving democratic capitalism.
